IE054 - Josh & Tyler Vol. II: Brian De Palma's "BLOW OUT"

Josh and Tyler get cozy in the backyard around a campfire to discuss Brian De Palma's 1980 masterpiece "Blow Out" starring John Travolta, Nancy Allen and John Lithgow. They also dig into different methods of storytelling in film, novels and albums, tropes in modern cinema, the value of seeking out art from previous generations, the implications of becoming a celebrity at a young age, Tyler working on a new book of poetry that stems out of his personal trials and life experience and, as always, they discuss some heady existential concepts about God, life, the universe, and everything.

IE053 - Hunter Beaumont of Fellowship Denver

Hunter Beaumont is one of the pastors of Fellowship Denver, the church Josh attends. Josh sits down with Hunter for a conversation regarding his personal history in Arkansas and Texas and how he ultimately went from being a CPA to a pastor in Colorado. They also discuss the cultural tone of Denver in particular, other progressive cities similar to it and how this affects the larger culture in general, the recent movement of Millennials quitting church altogether, how churches are big, broken entities made up of messed up people and having to stay committed to that body through the rough patches to get to the good stuff, how social media affects the current world and what excites Hunter for the future of Denver.

Andy will return next episode, so this week Josh gives a short solo talk about writing and creating fictional characters who are more crazy and demented than him, the nature of creative types and the way they communicate (or don't) to finish collaborative projects, deadlines and expectations, a brief update on his short film "Cordial Kill" and the one person who is now holding back the entire project from being finished, and a message from the Twitter mailbag from one listener who thinks Andy and Josh are evil, gay-orgy-having individuals who should GET OUT of the church. Also, TCBY frozen yogurt.

IE049 - Fireside Chat with Tyler Barstow of Vinyl Me, Please & Andy phones in from Tour

Andy and the Hotel Neon boys call Josh to give a brief update on how the Slow Spaces tour is going. Then, Tyler Barstow of Vinyl Me, Please joins Josh in his backyard for a lengthy discussion that begins with the film Enter the Void but blooms into a full-on exploration of the depths of life, what happens when we die, spirituality and mysticism, psychedelic drug use, where God fits into all of this, how much our lives do or don't ultimately matter and the challenge of integrating symbolism into art and stories. It's a mind-bender of a conversation, but touches on some valuable ideas.

IE047 - Stemson's new album "WEIRD WORLD"

Our friend Stemson (Stefan Tomlinson; heard of him?) returns to the show to discuss his stylistically-all-over-the-place-but-very-enjoyable new record "Weird World," the lengthy process of writing and recording the songs, the concept behind the album art and Stefan's desires for his music project from here on. After the music talk, the Goodboys go deep on the joys of traveling while others around you are working, the (now rare) practice of taking time to listen to albums all the way through, how ultimate achievement in any field in life is not "the thing" that will make one satisfied, and lastly, Stefan opens up the floor for Josh and Andy to constructively critique his working process.

Stemson's new album "Weird World" can be found at stemson.bandcamp.com

Stemson, as well as Lowercase Noises, will be playing the 2017 AudioFeed Festival in Urbana, Illinois, June 30 - July 2. Tickets and info at audiofeedfestival.com/info-1/

IE043 - Depression & Motherhood with Andi Kirk

Josh sits down with Andi Kirk for a conversation that quickly goes into deep and vulnerable territory surrounding anxiety, depression, anti-depressants, therapy, contemplating suicide and how being a wife and a mother of three factor into these heavy realities. We also touch on the current feminism movement, President Trump and the ambiguous boundaries that have crept into culture defining what we can and cannot say without being ridiculed.

Andi writes a blog to document her journey and experience in real time at failingmotherhood.com

Lowercase Noises' new record "The Swiss Illness" is available now and Andy will be touring a bunch this summer, performing both house shows with Hotel Neon and supporting Emery on certain dates. Info and tickets can be found at lowercasenoises.com/tour

This week Andy and Josh break out the guitars for a little on-mic impromptu hootenanny before digging into why Josh has big issues with authority figures and ambiguous cultural obligations. We discuss how those come into play in regards to work, church, holidays and even marriage. This one gets deep and brutally honest. Get into it.

IE040 - The Enneagram, Inspiration & the Passage of Time

This week Josh revisits the Enneagram results for his personality type 4w5 and shares how the answers there were revealing and helpful. Josh expounds on new writing projects in the works which leads to discussing how inspiration often comes from outside sources than one's own craft. Andy then shares a detour he took coming back from Denver this weekend and how it was deeply tied to nostalgia and fond memories but also heaviness and discomfort.

IE039 - TIM & BETONY COONS OF GIANTS & PILGRIMS

Above are the pieces by Betony Coons that she specifically makes reference to on this episode.

Tim and Betony Coons are a husband and wife team who have collaborated to build a unique project together called Giants & Pilgrims: A Marriage of Art and Music. Josh drove out to their home and art studio in Greeley, Colorado to speak with them about what the project is, how it began, their desires behind it, and how they go about integrating life themes with artwork and music. Because this is Ink & Echo, we also dive into how having children can change one's view of mortality, the darker aspects of some of Betony's work in particular and where Tim and Betony individually find inspiration and life to fuel them as artists and parents. Prior to the interview portion, Andy and Josh discuss a few new things surrounding Andy's next album, how busy-ness has been beneficial to Andy in the past week, Josh tells an airport layover story in which he learned a lot more about the Burning Man Festival, and we close the show with a curious email Andy received in response to his music.

See and hear Tim and Betony's collaborative art and music at giantsandpilgrims.com

Giants & Pilgrim's music can be purchased at giantsandpilgrims.bandcamp.com

Prints of Betony's artwork can be purchased at graysparrow Etsy shop.

IE038 - MARSHALL USINGER OF BE STILL THE EARTH

We're joined this week for the whole episode by our new friend Marshall, a longtime listener, a fellow musician and composer living in Denver and an insightful person. The discussion starts with Andy sharing how he has been going through some of the most intense depression of his life, the reasons why and how he is dealing with it. We talk about struggling to have motivation within day jobs, having integrity towards our employers and the benefit (or necessity) of tension between doing hard work that is unfulfilling alongside pursuing creative projects that are. We also discuss how self worth or value as a person does not come from productivity or quantity of output, no matter how much the present culture would have one think so. Marshall talks about how he got into making music and the ways in which it has grown for him even over a short period of time, as well as how he thinks about writing music or stepping into a new project and how it differs from Andy's approach.

IE037 - Vulnerability Isn't Everything

This week the Goodboys discuss Brene Brown's "Daring Greatly" and why Josh wasn't into it as well as Josh's recent work on himself to undo years of psychological issues and misled principles due to guilt and shame. Also, Josh is excited to write again because of Stephen King. The talk then moves to productivity, workflow and disciplinary practices in how Josh and Andy plan out (or don't plan) their respective work days, and how lack of motivation, distraction and anxiety are so prevalent in society's approach to being creative and getting things done. We touch on how Andy's new album preorder is going and how it differs from previous releases now that he is on a label and we close with talking about views on college education, our own (very different) experiences and how we think of it in relation to our kids.
